Anybody has a trick on how to prevent skinning when a can of varnish has been opened? I try the new can of Bloxygen which is junk, the old one was much better.

My super secret is to not buy more than I need. I can't remember the last time I had half a quart of anything sitting around long. Is your business that slow?

Rich,
Business is not slow, what is slow is building a 40' yachts.

Long before inert gasses became the thing, we used generic marbles to put in the can that brought the volume of the can up to the tip top of the inside rim. Then placed some food rap over that and hammered the lid shut.!!
Skins can't form when the can stays completely filled, and the marbles, or other heavier than than coating type objects, can be used to do this, like SS bearings of any size etc.
When the can gets to the point where the marbles are equal or close to equal, you just buy smaller cans to start the process over.
The best part is the marbles/ bearings/etc. Will last forever, A one time purchase, and can be easily cleaned with solvents and dried, and kept ready for their next use.!!
PS: use disposable cups to remove the amount you want to use, then add more marbles as necessary.

We have light metal fab in the shop as well and have Argon and CO2 mix gas bottles for mig/tig and I just top off cans that wont see use for a while with Argon. Kind of a PITA but you could order a case or two of empty quart cans and box down your partial gallons into quarts.

If its something you deal with regularly I'd just head to your local industrial gas supplier and buy a small cylinder of Argon and a regulator. I use the Argon in everything from finishes to wood glue when needed.

Buying only what you need is a great concept but it rarely works perfectly across the board.

Good tips, I may try the Argon. Thanks

if you are talking smaller qty's you can use a mason jar/lid and pull a vacuum on it. works well with 2k poly hardeners or anything that one opened don't last long. you can use a pressure pot to pull the vac if you have a vac bag set up or use a household seal a meal type with the lid sealing attachment.

With oil based products, I will often lightly pour a small amount of mineral spirits over the top of the varnish, so that an 1/8” or so of the mineral spirits sits on top of the varnish. Mineral Spirits is lighter than the varnish, the idea being the layer prevents the air in the can contacting the varnish. Next use, you just stir it in. Too much though, can over-thin the varnish, but usually it helps offset the varnish getting too thick with use. It seems to help.

Why they pull the Bloxygen response? He was dead on with his response. There was not any "misinformation" and other vendors have responded to posts about their products here before.
Simple solution, remove the oxygen from oxygen reactive products and they last longer.

The goal here is to eliminate damage from oxygen or moisture during storage. Bloxygen provides a simple and portable way to do this while using the original container with the original label.

The original poster had a problem with a specific finish. Over the 20 years of making and selling this product, we have found only three sources of problems:

1. Not Enough Gas Used: The entire storage container must be purged. You cannot use too much gas.
2. Slow Lid Seal / bad seal: Once the container is purged, the lid must be immediately sealed into place. Make sure that the lid is spotless and dent free to create an airtight seal.
3. Bad Finish: Once oil-based finishes absorb oxygen and skin over or gel, they will continue to have problems during storage. These finishes will never be the same. Start with NEW finish and use Bloxygen each and every time it's stored.

It sounds to me like his finish was exposed to oxygen or moisture and it has begun to cure in the container. This is unfortunate and cannot be reversed. Care must be taken to prevent exposing the finish to the atmosphere.

There are more details on our FAQ page (link below) and in the instructions I've attached.

I'm happy to help in any way. I hope this post does not get deleted. I'm just trying to help here.

Thank you all,

I have cut a circle on cardboard using the lid of the can as a template. Then placed the cut out on the surface of the paint inside the can. It keeps the air off the surface but it doesn't work forever. May be a month or 2.

Well I certainly don't like to see that and have spent thousands of hours and hundreds of thousands of dollars to deliver an effective tool to prevent that. Bloxygen works, but it takes special care to be effective. That's MAJOR oxygen damage. It looks like that finish was exposed to oxygen for a long time, sealed without purging, or perhaps was damaged by exposure to heat. As I said earlier, there are only three problems we've ever seen:

It looks like this finish was left open for a long time or perhaps finish from a secondary container was returned to the primary.

I'm very sorry this did not work for these leftovers. I'm happy to send you a replacement can of Bloxygen. We make it here in the USA and stand behind it. Please send me your address. I'm at IronWood.Designs@pobox.com.

Steven,
Don't worry about a replacement can. The picture was taken a week after it was sealed with Bloxygen and the can was a 1/4 full. Let's put to rest this, I am going with Argon.

Well I am going to speak up here and say Bloxyen does work when used as directed. I use lots of different Isocyanate catalysts
and they last years not months. Just used one today.
But it will not reverse a product that is starting to "kick off" due to not being protected.
It has saved me plenty of money over the decades.
Just to let you know nobody asked me to post this response, I just believe in the product and it has always worked for me.

FORUM GUIDELINES: Please review the guidelines below before posting at WOODWEB's Interactive Message Boards (return to top)

  • WOODWEB is a professional industrial woodworking site. Hobbyist and homeowner woodworking questions are inappropriate.
  • Messages should be kept reasonably short and on topic, relating to the focus of the forum. Responses should relate to the original question.
  • A valid email return address must be included with each message.
  • Advertising is inappropriate. The only exceptions are the Classified Ads Exchange, Machinery Exchange, Lumber Exchange, and Job Opportunities and Services Exchange. When posting listings in these areas, review the posting instructions carefully.
  • Subject lines may be edited for length and clarity.
  • "Cross posting" is not permitted. Choose the best forum for your question, and post your question at one forum only.
  • Messages requesting private responses will be removed - Forums are designed to provide information and assistance for all of our visitors. Private response requests are appropriate at WOODWEB's Exchanges and Job Opportunities and Services.
  • Messages that accuse businesses or individuals of alleged negative actions or behavior are inappropriate since WOODWEB is unable to verify or substantiate the claims.
  • Posts with the intent of soliciting answers to surveys are not appropriate. Contact WOODWEB for more information on initiating a survey.
  • Excessive forum participation by an individual upsets the balance of a healthy forum atmosphere. Individuals who excessively post responses containing marginal content will be considered repeat forum abusers.
  • Responses that initiate or support inappropriate and off-topic discussion of general politics detract from the professional woodworking focus of WOODWEB, and will be removed.
  • Participants are encouraged to use their real name when posting. Intentionally using another persons name is prohibited, and posts of this nature will be removed at WOODWEB's discretion.
  • Comments, questions, or criticisms regarding Forum policies should be directed to WOODWEB's Systems Administrator
    (return to top).

Carefully review your message before clicking on the "Send Message" button - you will not be able to revise the message once it has been sent.

You will be notified of responses to the message(s) you posted via email. Be sure to enter your email address correctly.

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).

The staff of WOODWEB assume no responsibility for the accuracy, content, or outcome of any posting transmitted at WOODWEB's Message Boards. Participants should undertake the use of machinery, materials and methods discussed at WOODWEB's Message Boards after considerate evaluation, and at their own risk.
