Vinyl Primer taking to long to dry

4/14/22

Shooting a Chem craft CV finish bright yellow. We were supplied a clear vinyl sealer tinted yellow and after priming with it using correct % catalyst it is taking about 4 times the amount to dry. Technician claims its the tint that's causing it to take so long to dry, about 30 hours before we can sand without balling up. Any thoughts??

My question to the Rep would be what type of colorant was used and at what percentage.

A local shop tinted it?

This is same company that has tinted our colors for ML Campbell for 20 years, they now have switched to ChemCraft. They have tinted both pigmented and clear finishes in past with no issues.
My finisher logs all materials mixed and % of each. Not a problem of missing catalyst.

Do they tint all types of their finishes.? It is easy to add the wrong pigments or dyes if many types are being used.! It may be a case of using a pigment not compatible with the Vinyl, but was the right color for the tint, there are many yellows as you know. That said I would ask the name and type and company that supplies them, and go directly to that company and find out for sure if that individual yellow is compatible with Vynil your using or not.! Give them the MSDS on your product if necessary and the brand name of the vinyll.! Vynil is known as polyvinyl chloride which should be listed as the main constituent in the MSDS .!

We switched recently when Louis and co went to chemcraft from ml.

They sold me the select line of precat sealers and primers and it was a nightmare to use and sand .

Afterwords they admitted it only works if you have a cook off oven to cure it .

This after selling me 1000's of dollars of tinted primers that they wouldn't take back .

So I went to Sherwin Williams and their products from the west Evans branch have been very good .

Now the rep is calling asking to give me some credit to get my business back .

I say refund it all as it has cost me countless hours of rework and wasted time .

Boy...I hear you loud and clear on this matter
Quicktrim.!!
It's a crying shame that the small business man has to suffer the consequences of a middleman selling product that they don't inform the purchaser of all of the necessary info upfront of how to properly use there products being sold and
The does and don'ts or must have's about the product(s) being purchased.
The large companies being supplied with materials always has a performance guarantee
They sign between the coatings company and the end user which covers any losses incurred in use of their products, including all loss of time, not only in the finishing, but the remaking of the goods, and overtime to keep their schedules on track.!!
We had such at OSF with SW back in the mid nineties, as well as others. They were also obligated to provide a technical chemist, to both train and troubleshoot any and all problems 24/7
As we were running a two 12 hour shift around the clock 6 days a week, and 1 shift on sundays.!
Unfortunately, small companies will never get that type of deal, you have to be buying millions of dollars worth of product to do so.! And the coatings Mfg. Has to be big enough to both absorb any losses that occur without going bankrupt.!
Just know there have been may small shops that have suffered this problem including my first business back in 1970 in Florida. It hurt me bad at the time.!

I have used chemcraft for 4 years now, I have Never used a vinyl primer they have specific primers for post cat and pre cat, you only use vinyl sealer when you are using clear. I Will say that I have used about every line out there over the years, and I have found that chemcraft is far an away superior My guess is you're using the wrong product, they vinyl sealer they provide doesn't get catalyzed, the primer does, I don't have access to the part number, but it should powder sand in an hour or so, pre cat, 30 minutes.

Vinyl Sealers are typically low solids off the bat, like 17%ish. Any more than around an oz per gallon and you are going to have problems with drying and softness of the coating. Need to make sure you are using a high solids vinyl sealer if tinting and also, remember that most vinyl sealer are meant to be sprayed on thin. If you are putting on thick layers if vinyl like you would a primer then this may be causing problems too. Chemcraft makes a white vinyl primer that you can add a bit of yellow to and also it can be catalyzed at 3% to speed up curing and enhance hardness as well as compatibility with post cats and CVs.

  • WOODWEB is a professional industrial woodworking site. Hobbyist and homeowner woodworking questions are inappropriate.
  • Messages should be kept reasonably short and on topic, relating to the focus of the forum. Responses should relate to the original question.
  • A valid email return address must be included with each message.
  • Advertising is inappropriate. The only exceptions are the Classified Ads Exchange, Machinery Exchange, Lumber Exchange, and Job Opportunities and Services Exchange. When posting listings in these areas, review the posting instructions carefully.
  • Subject lines may be edited for length and clarity.
  • "Cross posting" is not permitted. Choose the best forum for your question, and post your question at one forum only.
  • Messages requesting private responses will be removed - Forums are designed to provide information and assistance for all of our visitors. Private response requests are appropriate at WOODWEB's Exchanges and Job Opportunities and Services.

  • Posts with the intent of soliciting answers to surveys are not appropriate. Contact WOODWEB for more information on initiating a survey.
  • Excessive forum participation by an individual upsets the balance of a healthy forum atmosphere. Individuals who excessively post responses containing marginal content will be considered repeat forum abusers.
  • Responses that initiate or support inappropriate and off-topic discussion of general politics detract from the professional woodworking focus of WOODWEB, and will be removed.

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
