UV Resistant Stain / Topcoat Recommendation for Exterior Door

9/29/22
Tyle Johnson Member

Our customer on a current commercial project has requested that we finish a solid wood ( Mahogany) main entry door that they have ordered from a third party vendor.
The door will face east and will receive direct morning sun.
Typically, we use ML Campbell Dye and Wiping stains applied and mixed with B10 Base. For UV resistance we would normally apply Sherwin Williams Conversion Varnish with the incorporated UV INHIBITOR.
We understand and have made it clear to our customer that no matter what is used on the finish of this door it will fade over time. This is a commercial project, and the door is the main entry into a restaurant.
We have a couple questions that we are hoping to get some opinions on.
- Can anyone recommend a Specific Stain product that has a significant performance advantage in resistance to fading in direct sun when applied on an exterior product?
- Any recommendation on Best performing Topcoat to go along with said Stain product?

What is an acceptable longevity before it needs to be refinished, because it will need it in the near future.

You will need to apply a water based stain for exterior.
The best pigments are transparent iron oxide (yellow, red, brown) like chromachem 896
And an acrylic pu exterior top coat (like Polane SW with V66V29 catalyst
3 coats overall the door

You could use common sense with your client and have them order "2" doors, finish both and have one installed and the other on the ready when its needed, just make sure they order two color matched doors so as not to complicate matters.! As to pigments, the best are those that have been used for centuries and proven themselves to be "Permanent.! Those are raw and burnt umber, raw and burnt Sienna, yellow oxide, Pthalo blue, red, and green.... which were used all last century and before in wood finishing in Europe and America and across the globe.!
These can be had from Mohawks company. And elsewhere. HULS synthetic pigments will get the job done, they are good, but since they are " new" as compared to the earth pigments, time will tell how close they are to the old standards.! of course carbon black and titanium oxide are also permanent non colors you may need to tint or lighten any of the colors if and when necessary.!
As to top coats, my preference has been 2K over polyester, depending where your located, I could suggest brands, but most of my work was done in Florida, from the mid sixties to the early two thousands. If your in a high UV concentrated area like that, then I can help, if not those who have recommended finishes so far will suffice, keep in mind that SW ..WW varnish yellows when in direct sunlight, where as a good exterior grade 2 K like they use on cars etc., will last at least a decade or more with daily strong sunlight on it for the entire day.!
If I can be of further assistance let me know.

To minimize fading, you will need to get a colour match using non-dye pigments. All dyes breakdown over time with UV light. 844 colorants made from oxides like TW, YO, RO, BU, etc are much more UV stable which is why they are used as impregnating agents in exterior wood projects. Get as close to the colour as possible in the stain match using oxide pigments and let the customer know that this is as close as it's going to get unless they want the colour to fade in a few years. An exterior grade 2k poly with good UV inhibitors that you can lay on a few thick coats of would help as. Check with Gemini about their Sirca product line.

SW Conversion Varnish is an interior finish and will not hold up in exterior conditions.

FORUM GUIDELINES: Please review the guidelines below before posting at WOODWEB's Interactive Message Boards (return to top)

  • WOODWEB is a professional industrial woodworking site. Hobbyist and homeowner woodworking questions are inappropriate.
  • Messages should be kept reasonably short and on topic, relating to the focus of the forum. Responses should relate to the original question.
  • A valid email return address must be included with each message.
  • Advertising is inappropriate. The only exceptions are the Classified Ads Exchange, Machinery Exchange, Lumber Exchange, and Job Opportunities and Services Exchange. When posting listings in these areas, review the posting instructions carefully.
  • Subject lines may be edited for length and clarity.
  • "Cross posting" is not permitted. Choose the best forum for your question, and post your question at one forum only.
  • Messages requesting private responses will be removed - Forums are designed to provide information and assistance for all of our visitors. Private response requests are appropriate at WOODWEB's Exchanges and Job Opportunities and Services.
  • Messages that accuse businesses or individuals of alleged negative actions or behavior are inappropriate since WOODWEB is unable to verify or substantiate the claims.
  • Posts with the intent of soliciting answers to surveys are not appropriate. Contact WOODWEB for more information on initiating a survey.
  • Excessive forum participation by an individual upsets the balance of a healthy forum atmosphere. Individuals who excessively post responses containing marginal content will be considered repeat forum abusers.
  • Responses that initiate or support inappropriate and off-topic discussion of general politics detract from the professional woodworking focus of WOODWEB, and will be removed.
  • Participants are encouraged to use their real name when posting. Intentionally using another persons name is prohibited, and posts of this nature will be removed at WOODWEB's discretion.
  • Comments, questions, or criticisms regarding Forum policies should be directed to WOODWEB's Systems Administrator

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
