AAA system to solve problems?

11/23/22

I've been spraying ML Campbell Envirovar pigmented with a Turbine and haven't had any issues. Until I tried spraying some large vertical panels (70"x65") The Turbine wouldn't lay enough product fast enough without my starting point drying before I could get back and spray the edges.I tried a Lemmer Pressure Pot, and I can get enough material on, but am getting sags if it is too heavy, and overlap lines if I spray it any lighter. I've had better success turning the air pressure up to 45psi on the pressure pot, but end up having way too much overspray and blowback. Can't seem to get the happy spot in between.
Just wondering if anyone thinks a AAA system would solve my issues (I've been toying with the idea for some time), or it's just my application/settings on the pressure pot.
I've gone through three gallons and too many hours of sanding to try any more with my current set-up. And laying the panels flat isn't an option, I would have done that a long time ago!

respectfully, aaa is the go to system for one man to hundred man shops. your transfer effeciency will go up, your usage will go down, your productivity will go up,.....you will have to get used to one thing. an aaa system sprays very quiet and thus many operators gauge their spray speed by the noise from the gun.

the aaa system has much better ability to atomize higher viscosity coatings than your existing systems , yup they cost more. figure approx 2k-3k

a 15-1 ratio is all you need, a 30-1 is overkill, way overkill. there is so much parity between the following companies imho and i have tried most if not all of them, binks, wagner, graco, kremlin, ca technologies....

most of the difference between them all is person or you who knows how to set them up and it really is easy, starting points are available thru material mfg tech support sheets. too many of my buddies use too small a tip with their air atomizing pressures 2-3 times what it should be but their stubborn.

here is what seperates my vendors, does the person who sells it know how to take it apart and trouble shoot? if they don't i move on to someone else.....

most seem to say just call an 800 number, nope, not me , not interested in that tech support operation.....either you know the eqpt or you don't.

make the jump to aaa, it is worth it, happy holidays.

You can't go wrong with a AAA
I have the CAT 14:1 peak pump and really like it
CA Technologies has good customer support
Wether you have a lot or little to spray it works very well
(If I have to spray a QT or less I use my gravity gun with 3M PPS)
Also cleaning the machine is not as bad as you may think
You could look at airless sprayers but I've heard that those pumps doesn't last with solvent materials
If you do look at airless, look at the one that has pressure control unit
I was looking at the Graco 395
Just over $1000.00
Also make sure you use a.RPFF tip(Reduce Pressure Fine Finish)
But check with other about using solvent based in those machines
I would seriously look into the AAA
$2-3000.00 should get you started
Also with a AAA you don't need to invest in a big compressor if you don't already have one
Hope this helps with your decision

Thanks everyone for the advice, no surprise that you all recommend getting a aaa. I have looked into a Kremlin from my local supplier and it happens that they have a EOS 15-C25 on sale for a price I can't pass up. I've ordered one and it should show up next week.
I can't wait to see how it performs.

do you mind me asking what the sale price was?

I agree with what the other folks said, an AAA is a great system , especially tor transfer efficiently. I have a Kremlin 30:1 pump, it works well for some very viscous coatings, I also have 3 CA technologies 14:1 pumps that work great gor thinner coatings and spray stains.
However back to your original dilemma, the panels you are spraying are not that big, so if your leading edge is drying too fast you should try a retarder or thinner. Are you spraying in a booth, I can get excellent results from a pressure pot, the problem is all the overspray that ends up in your filters.

Herb, I am near Ottawa Ontario, and deal with Richelieu who has a sale on the Kremlin for 3,650 CAN.

Scott, yeah, I agree that part of my issue would be solved by a retarder, I have already thinned the product as much as I dare. We will see if I end up using retarder even when I use the aaa, but at least I won't have to deal with the overspray issue and large compressor. I am spraying in a booth, not the best amount of air removal but good enough for the amount I usually spray.

I've debated for a while about getting one, and I figure the aaa is an early Christmas gift to myself....

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
