Surf prep vs festool sanders

3/5/23
Mike

I’ve joined the festool band wagon and have invested thousands into their tools.

As time has gone by, I see some people saying the surf prep is better overall than festool sanders

Which do you have S P or F and what is your opinion which is better and why for-

1. Avoiding swirls “C’s”
2. Sanding brand new or sanding after stripping a piece
3. Detail sanding
4. Dust collection

Etc

I don’t care about the cost, but which do you like better, model numbers and why?

Also, can I use a surf prep with my F dust extraction?

As someone who invested lots of money on festool, I will say if you bank account is healthy then go for festool
I'm myself done with them and their price hike every years
I sold most of my festools
Their price not only goes up with the tools but everything else!
I used to have a dts400 and got tired of buying new pads
I have a surfprep and like it very much
And yes it does work with the festool vacs

Festool makes some very good tools. They don't make the best of every tool. There seems to be a group of people who like the matching boxes and the higher prices. It makes them feel better in some way I just don't understand. Even if I had an unlimited budget, I would still buy various power tools made by other manufacturers, because they are superior.

We've used the Mirka sanders for many years. I prefer them to the Festool. We wore out a couple of the Festool sanders 10 years ago. I have a Bosch RO sander that's 20 years old that will not die. It's done real work not fluffy cabinet shop stuff. Not as accurate as the Festool, but it destroys them on durability.

My issue with Festool is YOU can't repair them, they will not sell you the parts. I have one the "hold on" button won't work. Went to buy a trigger and they won't sell it to you. Must send to them so a "qualified" electrician can replace trigger. In 45+ years, I have replaced a few triggers. My Surf Preps are good replacements!

I don't understand the use of electric sanders. To me, air makes much more sense. I use Dynabrade 6", 8" and 12" (never figured out why most use a 5") Pads are a wear item, I keep new ones in back up. I have one Festool sander, it's still in the box (saw it just the other day) Doesn't answer your question though.

Air sanders are expensive to operate. That's why so many have switched to brushless.

I haven't used a air sander that performs as well the Mirka sanders either.

With that said, I need to get a couple more dynabrades in the shop. There's some things they are just better at.

As far as Festool sanders go, I haven't used one that blew me away. Good, but not incredible. I believe Airvantage makes the 3M, Surfprep, and Mirka sanders. Plus they sell insert their own brand. The Mirka has better features from the Airvantage I have.

We are all Festool now. I should say that I am against Festool on most tools. Their Domino, Track Saw and now sanders are all we have.
We used to be all Dynabrades. Air is expensive, but mostly I like the better dust collection you get with electrics and a dedicated, actuated vacuum.
The ETS REQ series of fine sanders work for us instead of the more aggressive versions. We have a 2 head widebelt that we keep tuned and use properly, so we don't need to grind away belt marks. My finisher is hyper-tuned to sanding marks and this system has been the best we've tried.
We had one of the Surfprep electric version that is the same look as the Deros. It died 2 days after the warranty ended.

I'm another vote for mirka. I've owned or demo'd most of the big brands and mirka was the best fit for my shop.

We like the Mirka. Also have the air vantage, slower start up,seems to get hot sooner than the Mirka.

FORUM GUIDELINES: Please review the guidelines below before posting at WOODWEB's Interactive Message Boards (return to top)

  • WOODWEB is a professional industrial woodworking site. Hobbyist and homeowner woodworking questions are inappropriate.
  • Messages should be kept reasonably short and on topic, relating to the focus of the forum. Responses should relate to the original question.
  • A valid email return address must be included with each message.
  • Advertising is inappropriate. The only exceptions are the Classified Ads Exchange, Machinery Exchange, Lumber Exchange, and Job Opportunities and Services Exchange. When posting listings in these areas, review the posting instructions carefully.
  • Subject lines may be edited for length and clarity.
  • "Cross posting" is not permitted. Choose the best forum for your question, and post your question at one forum only.
  • Messages requesting private responses will be removed - Forums are designed to provide information and assistance for all of our visitors. Private response requests are appropriate at WOODWEB's Exchanges and Job Opportunities and Services.
  • Messages that accuse businesses or individuals of alleged negative actions or behavior are inappropriate since WOODWEB is unable to verify or substantiate the claims.
  • Posts with the intent of soliciting answers to surveys are not appropriate. Contact WOODWEB for more information on initiating a survey.
  • Excessive forum participation by an individual upsets the balance of a healthy forum atmosphere. Individuals who excessively post responses containing marginal content will be considered repeat forum abusers.
  • Responses that initiate or support inappropriate and off-topic discussion of general politics detract from the professional woodworking focus of WOODWEB, and will be removed.
  • Participants are encouraged to use their real name when posting. Intentionally using another persons name is prohibited, and posts of this nature will be removed at WOODWEB's discretion.

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
