Post Cat vs CV

Thanks for your help so far! One thing I've noticed since using CV is that it takes a lot longer for the odor to go away. I need to deliver a few tall bookcases that I finished a week ago and I will need to explain that the odor will dissipate. Have you had the same experience. I have not noticed this when using post cat. For bookcases, do you think CV is that much stronger than Post Cat?? Thanks again.

I've always suggested to the client with new cabinets to leave the doors open overnight for a few nights to help the fumes escape. It's rare that they stay in the shop long enough for them to out gas fully.

Bring the temp up to 100 or so for a few hours will usually cure CV fully. Or 90 overnight.

If you have a booth that allows you to spray CV, and you're worried about the smell, why not just bump up to 2k poly? It's not all that much more expensive, is considerably more durable, and has no off gassing concerns.

Yes Tyler right and little shrinkage with 2 K

Solvent or WB 2k? Our normal finish is SW solvent CV but when we want a bullet proof finish we use MLC Polarion 2K and that smell is extremely more potent in comparison to the CV.

Polarion's smell is bad, but it's gone in 3 days if you keep it above 65ºF. Whereas CV Krystal takes at least a solid week to dissipate on the external of the cabinet and 2 weeks on internal areas.

That's why I'll tell my clients to leave the cabinet doors open over night for a while to let the off gassing clear out if the cabinets are delivered shortly after finishing.

We use Sivam solvent 2k poly. In 12 hours it has almost no smell. There have been no complaints over the smell. Sprays better than polarion and it's a good deal cheaper.

Looks to be in the same price range as Polarion.

I can only speak about my suppliers, I was never a huge volume purchaser with my MLC distributor so I probably wasn't getting their best prices

I don't use to much 2K as I find it slow to dry. Main use is countertops.

But the prices looked equivalent when I went to the Richelieu site compared to what I've paid at my distributor. I too, only buy in small quantities for most of my finishes.

Ah, I get about 30% off of Richelieu list price on finishes

11/13/23       #12: Post Cat vs CV ...

That might make a difference LOL

The list it as $91 for 5L of satin
$355 for 25L satin

Little over $100 for the catalyst 5L

I'm guessing it's mixed at 50 50 although I didn't look up the PI sheets.

Where the Polarion is 20% catalyst

Yeah, I'm paying $55 for 5L of the satin topcoat, or $275 for 25l, and $207 for 12.5L of the catalyst. It's mixed at a 2:1 ratio. If you haven't tried it I'd give it a shot, really, really nice to work with.

Mind if I ask who your supplier is? Mine is carrying MLC and Milesi.

I'm using Richelieu for sivam, I just beat up my rep on the prices. For MLC it's Atlantic plywood.

Atlantic for me too.

Almost any Post Cat is much more durable(especially because of the thicker film finish), completes it's full cure faster(stops off gasing and gets harder), and is more expensive than CV.

People like CV because its self sealing, more durable/water resistant than a precat and not much more expensive. Downside of CV is it takes forever to come to a full cure(not cured until it stops off gasing). You can't build a decent film, so it's not good for certain applications.

We went 95% waterborne back when everyone was switching to CV. I've opened a cabinet or unused drawer bank like a year after install, and it still stinks. Usually in a study where no one ever opens the cabinet doors/drawers.

FORUM GUIDELINES: Please review the guidelines below before posting at WOODWEB's Interactive Message Boards (return to top)

  • WOODWEB is a professional industrial woodworking site. Hobbyist and homeowner woodworking questions are inappropriate.
  • Messages should be kept reasonably short and on topic, relating to the focus of the forum. Responses should relate to the original question.
  • A valid email return address must be included with each message.
  • Advertising is inappropriate. The only exceptions are the Classified Ads Exchange, Machinery Exchange, Lumber Exchange, and Job Opportunities and Services Exchange. When posting listings in these areas, review the posting instructions carefully.
  • Subject lines may be edited for length and clarity.
  • "Cross posting" is not permitted. Choose the best forum for your question, and post your question at one forum only.
  • Messages requesting private responses will be removed - Forums are designed to provide information and assistance for all of our visitors. Private response requests are appropriate at WOODWEB's Exchanges and Job Opportunities and Services.
  • Messages that accuse businesses or individuals of alleged negative actions or behavior are inappropriate since WOODWEB is unable to verify or substantiate the claims.
  • Posts with the intent of soliciting answers to surveys are not appropriate. Contact WOODWEB for more information on initiating a survey.
  • Excessive forum participation by an individual upsets the balance of a healthy forum atmosphere. Individuals who excessively post responses containing marginal content will be considered repeat forum abusers.
  • Responses that initiate or support inappropriate and off-topic discussion of general politics detract from the professional woodworking focus of WOODWEB, and will be removed.
  • Participants are encouraged to use their real name when posting. Intentionally using another persons name is prohibited, and posts of this nature will be removed at WOODWEB's discretion.
  • Comments, questions, or criticisms regarding Forum policies should be directed to WOODWEB's Systems Administrator
    (return to top).

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
