Turino application thickness

I have been considering switching from Magnamax to Turino conversion varrnish because of a recommendation from my supplier. I have a few questions that I hope you can help me with.

I was told that film thickness and temperature were critical during and after application. According to the product information sheet the dry mil thickness should not exceed 5 mils. I am not sure how to measure an actual dry mil finish.

I found a formula that says if I multiply the wet mil thickness by the solids by volume (40% for Turino) that would give me the dry mil thickness. Using this formula, if I applied a 3 wet mil thickness and multiplied it by .40 (40%) that would give me a dry mil thickness of 1.2 which is well under the maximum dry mil thickness.

Using the same formula I could apply two coats at 5 wet mils and still be under the 5 mil maximum. Sound like a lot of coating thickness.

Another question is about application temperature. How long after application does the product have to remain at 70 degrees before it can be moved to an unheated storage unit?
Any comments or suggestions welcome.

Generally you use a 3 coat system for pigmented. 1 coat primer and 2 coats finish. Doing 5 mil on each with scuffing between gets you darn close to 5 mil dry.

I've asked the question about how long to cure at temperature before you can put into cold storage many times. It's something they don't want to answer I'm guessing. I've burned up a lot of fuel keeping things warm because I don't know when cured is cured enough.

Also don't forget your reduction rates affect your solids %, this throwing your formula off of you reduce by 10,20%, etc.

I loved turino for that awesome smooth buttery feel. I haven't found a pigmented topcoat to match.

My problem was I felt it took too long to full dry.

Doors that were a few days dry (summer time) If I leaned them against wall they would "stick" very slightly.

I asked for assistance from mlc rep and the answer was basically "play with all these different Reducers. Oh and let it fully dry".....

Well I don't know about the rest of you but I don't have a month for the turino to "full cure" before job heads out the door.

I was fed up and switched to milesi 2k and so much better result. Stuff felt "full cure" in less than 24hrs. (Granted I know it's not) but it's not sticking like the turino.

Turino feels the best. But I'm not a fan of getting it fully cured.

Stealth works well and gives that smooth feel. 6 hours and it's a hard dry. Of course it's a post cat. I've been using it since it came out. I push it through a Kremlin with 17% thinning with a mixture of 2 parts Flow Enhancer #2 and 3 parts Reducer. I make the mixture ahead of time and stick it in a spare can so I don't have to add them separately. 20oz FE #2 and 30oz reducer into a can and just pour it out at 17% of the original amount of Stealth not including the catalyst.

I agree. Stealth does give you that harder dry feel faster. Doesn't gum up the sandpaper as much.
But as your mentioning with the custom reducer, I found turino just sprayed better out of the can with 10% or less reduction.
I felt like the micro particle size of stealth is larger than turino.
Both decent. But you're right stealth is better for this situation.

However after trying 2k from milesi, I'm not missing anything from the stealth turino cv lines.

Just as Stealth isn't apples to apples neither is the 2k you are talking about. Each one is a full step above the next. Precat > Post Cat > 2K

How long does the 2K take to dry to touch? I use Polarion when I spray something that will be a horizontal surface (countertops, tables) and it has a 45 minute open time in anything but the warmest temperatures. It's a very long time to be open and subject to collecting dust falling out of the air. Stealth and Krystal are dry on the surface in 10-15 minutes and any dust falling on them won't be incorporated into the finish.

The aromatic series milesi 2k has a faster drying time than I've had with Krystal, klearvar, stealth, or turino.
Now the one caveat with the 2k I'm using is when it comes to the pigmented topcoats.. it can start to look "plastic - ish" if you build too high.

But I still enjoy the ease of use and incredible durability.

Like you were mentioning, all these vehicles have pros and cons.

Currently I'm very happy switching to the milesi 2k.

I haven't touched polarion. My local rep recommended I go milesi instead of mlc 2k variants. They notice less "issues" with the milesi 2k.

If you get a chance, check out the milesi stuff.
Primer: LBR102
Pigmented topcoat: KKR1 (white base)
Hardener: LNB20 (50%)

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
