Having sealing or capability issues

After five years of seamless use of this product combo, I encountered an unexpected issue while refinishing a table and benches. The first clear coat was flawless, but after a night's wait, a scuff, and a respray, an issue emerged.

Products and schedule:
1) Stripped, neutralized (acetone), and sanded all to 180
2) Applied MH wipe-on stain
3) Sprayed a wash coat using vinal sealer,
4) Scuffed after
5) Apply MH finishers glaze (even the color darkens the cherry)
6) Sprayed a wash coat of vinyl sealer, scuffed after
7) Then, I applied Renner LPL Conversion finish
8) Scuffed and sprayed the second coat after letting it sit for a few hours

On the second coat, to my surprise, the finish is cracking in random spots. I'm at a loss to explain this.
I assume the products I use have changed, and the vinyl sealer isn’t comparable to Renner LPL.

NEW INFORMATION AFTER TESTING
I have run a few tests, and I am not having capability issues between the vinyl sealer and Renner LPL in my test panels - all tests look great using the schedule above. However:

After stripping off the finish and final sanding, I let the cherry table top sit for a few days. I noticed that the table top and benches had something coming from the wood (see photo with raw cherry and spots). The spots wipe away, but I assume this might be reacting to the finish. Has anyone ever seen something like this before? I need to lock that down and am running tests by sealing the raw wood with blond shellac before applying a stain to see if it will prevent that from coming up. If you have any ideas on addressing this, I'm all ears. I can strip and refinish 200 pieces perfectly, and when this happens.

I don't use the products you've listed, but I have had those reactions when using oil based stains and or wax contamination.
The wax was from using paste srippers, and not getting all removes with after washing the surfaces. Acetone, by itself does not make a good wax removal solvent. Better off using VIP Baptist and stool mixture and scrubbing with steel wool , and may take 2-3 times to insure entire removal wiping the surface each time with with a clean white cloth rag.
As to the stain/ glaze material, if it contains linseed oil, or even other oils, it can wrinkle up if in a semi cured state, where it is dry to the touch, but still has oil or unevaporated slow solvent under the seemingly dry skin on top. I was using either Nitrocellulose or CAB Acrylics, so whether this will work for your coatings problem or not I can't say for sure...but I would look at the MSDS INFO
to see what your glaze ingredients are, to know if they contain oils or not, and your stripper has wax or not.!

Ok. I will look at the MSDS info and start removing the wax or oil from the wood before moving forward.

I don't know where to find VIP Baptist (was that a joke?), but I do have Wax Wash from Mohawk, and I will start with it to clean the surface.

Thanks for the clarification. My trusty Naphtha and Xylol came to the rescue. I have cleared off most of the spots with MH's Wax Wash, but there's still one spot that keeps oozing some liquid, and I will use the Naphtha and Xylol mixture for that one. I hope to be able to move forward with the finish schedule—this is a big table.

A heat gun or hair drier will help in assuring no seepage from the pores continues to be a problem, when you think the wood is dry use the heat gun and slowly go over the surface with the gun about 6-8" away and watch to see if any seepage happens, if it does wipe with cloth soaked in 99 proof rubbing alcohol, let flash, and run the gun over the area again to see if the seeping has stopped, hope this helps.!!

  • WOODWEB is a professional industrial woodworking site. Hobbyist and homeowner woodworking questions are inappropriate.
  • Messages should be kept reasonably short and on topic, relating to the focus of the forum. Responses should relate to the original question.
  • A valid email return address must be included with each message.
  • Advertising is inappropriate. The only exceptions are the Classified Ads Exchange, Machinery Exchange, Lumber Exchange, and Job Opportunities and Services Exchange. When posting listings in these areas, review the posting instructions carefully.
  • Subject lines may be edited for length and clarity.
  • "Cross posting" is not permitted. Choose the best forum for your question, and post your question at one forum only.
  • Messages requesting private responses will be removed - Forums are designed to provide information and assistance for all of our visitors. Private response requests are appropriate at WOODWEB's Exchanges and Job Opportunities and Services.
  • Messages that accuse businesses or individuals of alleged negative actions or behavior are inappropriate since WOODWEB is unable to verify or substantiate the claims.
  • Posts with the intent of soliciting answers to surveys are not appropriate. Contact WOODWEB for more information on initiating a survey.
  • Excessive forum participation by an individual upsets the balance of a healthy forum atmosphere. Individuals who excessively post responses containing marginal content will be considered repeat forum abusers.
  • Responses that initiate or support inappropriate and off-topic discussion of general politics detract from the professional woodworking focus of WOODWEB, and will be removed.
  • Participants are encouraged to use their real name when posting. Intentionally using another persons name is prohibited, and posts of this nature will be removed at WOODWEB's discretion.

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).

The staff of WOODWEB assume no responsibility for the accuracy, content, or outcome of any posting transmitted at WOODWEB's Message Boards. Participants should undertake the use of machinery, materials and methods discussed at WOODWEB's Message Boards after considerate evaluation, and at their own risk.
