Bed/Mattress Dimensions

Looking for some feedback here- I have made quite a few beds over the years- king, California king, Queen, full etc. I typically leave a gap of 1/2" to 3/4" on the sides when the mattress sits within a frame. I recently made a bed- a king which should be 76 by 80, and the length of the split box as well as the mattress was less than 79" and the width was closer to 77 1/2". Plus a solid inch thicker than what it was suppose to be. I vaguely remember making beds in the late 90"s with "overstuffed mattresses" and being told to leave more space in frames. Now it seems to be the opposite. Anybody encounter such drastic differences in mattress dimensions standard dimensions?

Yes, I built a bed last year and compared online numbers to measurements at a mattress store and found wild inconsistency, so I ordered the mattress and had it in hand before I finalized the parts. This worked well, of course, but makes me wonder what will happen when the mattress needs replacing.

With the growth of platform beds, overall dimensions can be widely variable. What stage are you at with the customer now? See if some rails with the mattress mounted high in them will work.
