Looking for comments on this table, as I've never seen anything like it. Obviously the entire interior rotates, but do the shelves also pivot at the same time? It's in a library in Prague.

I think they would have to rotate or the books would fall off. It looks like you would be able to reference different books by spinning it.

I think the simplest mechanism would be the shelves freely pivot but are weighted to maintain the ideal orientation. A more complex gear arrangement might have gears or levers to keep the shelves correct

I found some more info about this design, originally from the late 1600's, called a "book wheel" which had a complex set of integrated gears that would turn each shelf as the outer wheel sides turned. But gravity and proper location of the pivot points on the ends of the shelves would also keep the shelves level--think of a ferris wheel--without the gears.

My first thought was of a ferris wheel. However thinking more about it I suspect the gearing method just described is more likely. I think they would not have wanted the shelves swiveling around while reading a book.

Rotating it will allow you to refer to different books. Maybe a series of complex gears and mechanics. Beautiful design and a clever concept. I've never seen anything like this before, very rare antique.

I Think They Would Have To Rotate Or The Books Would Fall Off. So i want to Buy a Console Table that, easily access different books without having to move them around. It's a pretty nifty feature. checking out some Console Table Online and In-Store.

It is actually called a Book Wheel. Mainly used for reading and taking notes from different books at a time. This piece is used mainly by researchers, writers.
