replacing broken table slides, installing center leg
10/10/15
A client has a standard, four leg dining table with broken table slides. I've been contracted to replace the slides and the client wants a center leg installed to support the very heavy, nine foot long top when all the leaves are installed to prevent sagging. Osbourne says their standard slides are slightly bowed to prevent sagging. Using standard type slides, is it feasible to attach a cross bar with a leg to the center member of the slide so my client will have peace of mind?

I make a fair number of tables. I also use the 48" wood extenders/slides and often make a 5th leg that can be added when the table is extended all the way. Even with good sliders the table will say when out as far as it goes. I make the leg removable do the owners can easily add it when needed and remove it as easily.

Evolve that 5th leg to a drop down leg that is hinged to a plate on the the underside of the slides and the lower end of the leg is retained by a small shelf also on the slides. Place it all so that as the halves are pulled out to a certain point, the leg drops down due to gravity.

Thanks for the advise. I'll go ahead and make up the 5th leg and devise an attachment method that the customers can easily attach/detach as needed.
