Planer blade height
I recently acquired shop space that includes a Yates American J-180 planer. The blades need to be pulled and sharpened, but I can't find a blade height spec anywhere for when they are reinstalled. The manual I found gives a lot of other specs, but the only thing on blades refers to grinding and jointing in place, not an option on this machine. Contacted Yates American, but they had nothing. Anyone have thoughts on this?

Hey David. I have a Grizzly 20" planer. I use the woodstock planer pals. They are adjustable so you could check on several knives and set it to that depth/height. I use a grizzly knife sharpener, then they go back in at the same height. I think the big thing is that they are all at the same radial plane. I have not worked with you planer. take care.

Knife height outside of the cutter body will depend on how the rest of the machine is set up. My Powermatic said .125. This seamed a bit much so I changes it to .65 and re-adjusted the machine. I am using a dial indicator that rest on the head and measures the distance. Something Powermatic used to offer along with a bed and feed roll gauge.
