Jointer Setup

Hello All, I'm hoping to get some tips about setting up my jointer. Blades have been set using jointer setting tools, digital gauges, and whatever else I can get my hands on. The unit is a bench top Porter Cable. The only thing I have noticed that appears a little off is that the infeed table is millimeters higher on the fence side. I'm assuming this would account for getting angled edges with more taken off one side than the other. If the table is slightly twisted or bent can I just shim the other side or is that going to throw it off more if it is a legit twist? Any input would me very much appreciated. Also, I'm looking to upgrade the machine either way, if anyone has any suggestions for a good 8 inch model I'd love to hear them. My budget is about $1500 or so. I'm debating a new Jet or Grizzly vs a used Powermatic or Hammer. Thank you in advance.

You use a bench top jointer in a commercial business? Time to buy real machinery. I suggest nothing narrower than a 12" jointer if you intend to stay in business.

8” is all you need “to stay in business”. Unless you are frequently making interior/exterior doors there is no need to go bigger. You can still use a 8” to flatten the occasional wide one.

The Delta DJ-20 8” clones are the best design. Parallegram keeps the tables true. The longer in feed table will straighten 12’ boards with some practice.

I would look at one of the Grizzly of that type, unless you can find a deal on an old Delta or Powermatic.
Carbide inserts will quickly pay for themselves.

mm higher on one side? I'd be disappointed with a few thousandths higher on one side.

Thank you all for the tips. I've been looking at Jet, Grizzly, and a few of the lower end Powermatic's. Right now it seems like most Jet and Grizzly units are backordered for quite a while. I'm looking into used machine as well. Anyone have suggestions for good sites to find used machines?

machineseeker is a good place to start. Hammer is for hobbyist, dont use it for commercial. there has been some posts on the internet about Felder/Hammer's casting, do your homework, know your rights and be prepared.

Thanks again for all the helpful tips. I ended up buying the Grizzly G0856 8x72 helical head machine. No parallelogram tables but otherwise more than enough machine for my current and likely future needs.
