Is there a "splitting" analogy to Janka hardness?

As I view presentations on "chipload" vs. RPM vs. feed vs. speed, it occurs to me that the Janka hardness of the wood--which is a measure of the wood's resistance to COMPRESSION--is not so important to milling as its resistance to SPLITTING.

Has the "ease of splitting" of particular species been quantified by research?

If so, it would seem a straightforward matter to derive new feeds and speeds for newly encountered species based on their relative "splittability indices" and know working good settings for another specie.

Splitting has more to do with the grain type per species as well as grain type per piece(reaction type wood) than hardness. I would not make an across the board statement that the hardness is relative to checking/splitting. Some species do more so than others. I believe how the products are dryed has a huge impact on future splits/checks.

I don't think I did either.

I'm interested in finding out if there is a scientific measure of how comparatively easily/harder different woods split, akin to the Janka scale quantifying how relatively easy/hard they are to compress.

I ask because I think a measure like that would be more useful to calculating feeds and speeds needed to machine wood than Janka hardness.

Splitting resistance can vary from one tree to the next, both of the same species. Then do you rate all the species of trees in the same genus? (Hope I got that right) There are hundreds of different oaks sold under just red and white. Lots of different ash trees with different densities, and same goes for maple. Some mills would group box elder in with soft maple. I don't envision a way for that to be sorted down into just a simple chart.

I was asking if anyone knew of the existence of similar research with splitting resistance.
And I ask this because I think such a number might be useful for comparing the relative machinability of different species.
