Need a new (or used) shaper

We have been using Weaver shapers for approx. 25 years now. Getting old and sold them to purchase one single shaper. My question is pertaining to the many shapers that have multiple sized shafts or spacers. Wearvers are solid 1.25 " spindles. Powermatic 27 says they have spindles of .75, 1" and 1.25", I contacted Powermatic (act of congress) to see what the bearing size was on the shaft. Answer: Proprietary information. The break down of parts did not list the information. So, will a Powermatic 27 spin a 6" 1.25 dia. cutter. Seems to me if the bearing were on the 1" part of the shaft then this would be a weak point. Any body using Pwermatic with larger shaper cutters? Any suggestions as to another shaper that would be better in the 8000 dollar range? We wont be doing big jobs anymore but will still do custom curved moldings and stair rails. Thanks. Sorry for the long post.

Powermatic shapers are too expensive and only suited for light duty work. Light bearings, small quill assemblies, under built and sloppy lift mechanism.

If two guys can pick it up, it's underbuilt for what we need a shaper to do.

You're better off spending more and getting multiples more in quality in my opinion.

$5k can buy you a lot of shaper on the used market. The only new shaper I've ever bought was a PM27. Not worth the money.
SCM and SAC shapers are what I have, they are a good value. SAC stuff mechanically is great, but the electronics suck. Super smooth running though.

If I were shopping for new shapers, I would only look at machines that used an electro spindle and tool holders.

Thanks Karl,
I've been watching numerous auctions, craigslist, facebook market thing, and others. I wish I would have found one first before selling what I had. It's amazing the lessons you learn....even when you are up in your 60's.

I didn't have any issue finding shapers on Craig's. If you ran the cutter in question on a Weaver there are lots that fit that bill. Freight might become an issue however here is one that might work for $900.00. It's in California though.

If you want to spend your whole bank roll here is a nice one from a machinery dealer whom I have had the pleasure of buying from for the past thirty years. My guess is this plenty heavy enough.

Thanks all for the responses. Bruce, I have looked at the one at Barbo. looks like a great deal but they are on the west coast and we are in East TN. Freight would kill that one.
