widebelt sanding maple

WE have been sanding a lot of soft maple lately. Have been burning pelts. I'm assuming we need a more open coat belt and narrower more peaked abrasive looking for some recommendations. we are aware maple is problematic. its our lead drum which is steel. WE have the option to switch to hard maple. Would this burn less we start at 18 mm with 80 grit removing .4 mm per pass to 17 mm.Then intermediate pass 120 150 220 .2 mm. to 16.2mm and final 220 platen only to 16 mm. the belt burning is on the lead drum. Biesse 3 head steel drum, 60 durometer rubber drum, platen.

My opinion is that you are using too fine of grit and too slow of feed. Hard maple should burn easier.

I forgot my feed is 20 meter per min. what feed would you recommend.

we ran more maple today . My sander has a steel drum for the first belt (the 80grit we are burning). could the steel drum be the problem ?

We have a Biesse 3 head with a steel drum and have not had burning issues. Have you checked to make sure each head is adjusted properly to remove the correct amount and that they are adjusted properly in relation to each other? If so, how do you do it? It's odd that the first head is the problem.

You are removing 2mm (0.080") with abrasives. That is a lot. Also, your entire process seems very complicated for no real reason.

I don't know your process after this stage but I can make a suggestion and you can message me for greater detail.

Use a 60 grit cloth on the first head only to remove .5 mm per side at 20 feet per minute and not 20 meters per minute (60 fpm). One pass per side.

Then run 80, 120, 180 taking off .5mm per side. The 120 must remove .2mm and the drum in the 3rd head removing .1mm. The platen .05mm. The 80 takes anything above those numbers.

This is 1 pass per side on the 60 grit. Then 1 pass per side on the finishing sequence. If set up as written the result will melt off like butter under a random orbital and there will be no more burning until the belts are very well beyond used up.

Problem solved. I was relying on the unexpertise of my sandpaper rep. I ended up calling my sandpaper manufacturer direct and was abe to get a 30 pct. open coat. so far we have 20 hrs on the belt and il still looks good.
