I just just starting to use the vacuum bag 4x4 with the continous run pump and a 3.6"x3.6" platen And I just got the mesh for the top. My question is that a large portion of my work is way under 2'x2', can I use a smaller platen or does it need to stay at 3.6x3.6. Same with the mesh, can it be smaller? Another question for the experts out there, can I or how do I veneer an 8 sided column about 5" in diameter? Thanks Bob
You can do a smaller bag if you like, not a problem.
The column should be veneered before it is a column. Do it as flat stock, then create the angles and assemble.
Like the speaker cabinet guys that build these heavy MDF cabinets, then try to figger out how to veneer them.
The veneer goes on first.
Yup, you can use any size platen you want, or depending on circumstances, none at all!
The mesh just needs to be big enough to cover your project, or most of your project, or depending on circumstances, no mesh at all! I have a large roll of the mesh and to be honest I rarely use more than a small piece that's maybe 10" x 20" right under the connector. I've found that on most of the stuff I do there's plenty of room for the air to be removed without mesh.
You can build a long thinner bag from 20 mil sheet vinyl, or any size bag, if you are veneering a column already built.
