Veneered Jamb Extension

I have a solid wood (Alder) jamb extension to replace. It is in a north facing master bathroom in the cold western Canadian climate and hasn't stood up to the moisture and at times ice that it is exposed to. My plan at the moment is to use a 1/8" veneer on 5/8" Extira. The jambs are 4-1/4" wide. Am I asking for trouble if I don't also veneer the back side?

Sorry I should have mentioned it's a window. Unfortunately in this area it's possible to have over 100* difference between inside and outside temps. 70* inside, -40* outside. So you start to get moisture condensing and running down the window when the outside temp is far enough below freezing, which is the main issue as it pools on the sill. But if it gets cold enough as it seems to for a few days every winter it will freeze. Admittedly it is the finish that takes the brunt of the abuse but the solid wood still doesn't like all the moisture.

Why not look into some sort of solid surface material that has a similar color? Might be a little more pricey to start with but plastic isn't going to have its finish peel or the wood rot out.

So you are asking about a window sill then? Water running down a window will cause little damage to the side jams.

Rich your right, my apologies I should have been using the correct nomenclature. In this situation the sill I would have called a stool and the side jambs butt into the stool so any pooling moisture can wick into that joint. Alder seems to be very porous in its end grain which is part of my thinking about using veneered extira. Any thoughts about the using veneer over solid and whether I would need to veneer both sides if that was the chosen course?

Alder is one of the worst woods to ever use outside. Will rot in less than a year. Use honduras mahogany, or even white oak. The 6bb

I wouldn't use any fiber based material, even Extira, in this situation. A good exterior hardwood like Genuine Mahogany or Sapele would be my choice. Then veneer with epoxy as necessary to get the face species you want.

Plus I'll mention that your side jambs should be extending down past the butt ends of the sill instead of sitting on top of it, with again perhaps epoxy gluing the sill butt ends to the faces of the side jambs. The epoxy will glue them together and seal the end grain of the sills to prevent sill end rot. I don't think you mentioned sill material but a good exterior hardwood here as well.
