I am thinking of buying Grizzly tools for my new wood shop. What do people think of that brand?

It would help to know some specifcs. How many people in your shop? what are you making? are you mechanical? I have had several pieces of Grizzly equipment, some is better than others and I run a 2-3 man shop. As a frugal shop owner, I have come to the conclusion that you should always buy the best that you can afford, as it is always going to cost you more to upgrade.

Quality varies across the line, but customer service is consistently non-existent to hostile. I bought one of their 1HP dust collectors and the bearings went out 340 days after purchase (definitely less than a year of actual use). That's more than the one-year warranty so forget about replacement. After about an hour of arguing they agreed to send me a new set of Chinese bearings but made me pay for the shipping.

At least with used USA/European machinery you don't expect anything from the company.

I have a few of their machines and in 16 years have not had any serious problems. In my experience, their customer service has always been very good, way better than Delta.

As already said, some machines are good, some not so much. I have a 20" spiral head planer, we rewound the motor three times before we said to heck with it and replaced it with a Baldor. Had some bearings go out and just went local to purchase them with good Japanese bearings. We also have some of the shapers, 3 hp and 5 hp, not bad but they do the job. No comparison to my big 10 hp extrema, but price wise you have to compare apples to apples. Hope this helps.

I had one of their jointers.
It was okay as long as you never made eye contact with it. You could get the infeed and outfeed beds aligned easily enough but that's because you got to practice this every time you changed depth of cut.

The company is appropriately named.

I ordered a machinists level from them.
When it arrived it had a cracked glass cover over the bubble. When I called them they acted like I broke it. No replacement.
I had a 15" bandsaw from them and the tire wore out. I was never able to get a replacement. It seems a 15" bandsaw is not a standard size. They quit selling that modeI.
In my opinion, the most difficult part of dealing with them is that they seemed to assume that I was trying to rip them off when all I wanted was an undamaged product to begin with. Being treated like this was somewhat insulting.
I think the service is marginal at best.

When I started my commercial shop 11 years ago, I need the machinery as quickly and inexpensively as I could acquire it. I had 50K in orders and no time to shop auction or otherwise.
I drove up to Grizzly in PA and dropped 20K on machinery. In retrospect, I would not have done anything differently. As we've grown, I've replaced the table saws with saw stops, but upgraded and stayed with Grizzly for the Jointer and Planer. Both now spiral heads, and trouble-free, with small exceptions. We did swap out the double drum sander for a Woodmaster, but that was due more to a need for capacity. The 5Hp cyclone vac is the original, and still in service. I've read about a range of experiences, which leads me to believe that I have somehow purchased machines when the QC manager was paying attention. I wish you the same good luck in starting your business. You're starting off right by keeping the bottom line where it belongs. Have fun when you can!
