Shaper head with dowel profile knife

Shaper heads are not my forte so i need advice what product to buy. I need a 3 dowel shaper cutter and head with whatever bore. Cant find a carbide brazed one so i am assuming a head with cutter inserts in hss. dowel size is 11/64 which i assume a knife grinder comany can make for me.

How big of a shaper are you putting this on? Or is it a molder? What size spindle? How many HP? Are you planning on cutting one side and then the other to split them or is this just a bead style molding? Many custom knife companys out there, Hot Knives, Charles GG Schmidt, Mirror Reflections are just a few that could make this. Dustin

5 hp shaper, not on a moulder. 2 passes to make the dowel, second pass seperates the dowels. Steff feeder on its side. 1" spindle.

Its not the knife thats the issue, what body do i purchase to hold the knives?

Easiest solution, a 2 pocket head from any of the above mentioned companies will hold the knives. Better solution would be a 4 pocket head with 2 different cutting angles, one set at 12 degrees for hardwood, the other at 20 degrees for softwood. This way you are getting the best bang for your buck when purchasing a couple hundred dollar head. You also need to match the length of the head to your knives, meaning don't put a 2" wide knife in a 6" head (you'll bend the gibs when torque is applied) or knives sticking way past the length of the head ( can break a knife off while spinning, IE GRENADE!!) I have a few heads from 2" on up in length to cover my bases when running on the shaper. Make sure you follow the max RPM stated on the heads as well. I would also recommend using a power feeder for this type of cut. This wouldn't just nick your hand if you tangled up with it. What else can I suggest?

Dimar in Toronto will have a suitable body. FS Tools has specific dowel heads in their catalogue.

Section C1 of Fs catalogue. FS are expensive but good. I have custom heads done by Royce Ayr. They are in Cambridge ON.

I don't know how much you plan on using this profile. I am a big fan of this head from Great Lakes Tooling. The head is universal. The back support can be changed, and it is insert carbide. You can use the head for multiple profiles and if things change you don't have a custom head that is not usable.

Dave,
Guess one big question, how much of this dowel are you needing or wanting to produce? Lots of great ideas in the above responses but are you needing 10 feet or 10000? Some of the above tooling and heads aren't that much of an investment, some are pretty pricey. How much are you willing to invest to still make a good return on your money.
If you only need a small amount, find someone with a molder and outsource this. If you need a bunch but only once, maybe buying the heads and knives might be worth it. Need a ton? Buy a molder.

Hey Dave, Whitehill makes stock dowel cutters in many diameters for limiter heads. If they don't make stock what you're looking for, they certainly could in HSS for limiter heads but also they can tip the HSS knives in carbide for longer life if desired. Custom could be had in any number of their limiter blocks, but also for corrugated/serrated blocks.
