Edgebanding wave

I have loaded .5mm pvc edge tape in my mikro+. The tape seems solid but the face has waves or a wavey texture on it.

Do you have premill?
What does the glue application look like if you peel the tape?

No premill on this machine.

Im using helithern 480. Spec 180- 220 and 4-16 m/m my machine is 5.5 m/m iI could maybe bump the temp up to thin the glue out but need to find out if that's the issue.

Here are the pressure wheels. The drive seems to be set to 0mm clearance without edgetape as in with .5mm edge tape it wound push back .5mm and with 1mm it wound push back 1mm. The second wheel is 1mm proud before edge tape.

Spin the driven pressure wheel and the idler to feel if the bearings are still good.
It looks like this is an SCM K201 or similar. There is a preload handwheel beneath the guilotine for the pressure wheels. Mine has about 5/8" of thread showing.

Mine doesn't have a handwheel it has to bolts on the outside that apply pressure through a spring and the adjustment for in and out are a bolt and lock nut on the inside. I have increased the pressure on the drive wheel to keep the wheel parallel to the edge. There is now about 1mm it pushes back on both wheels.

This is how it looks

I dug down into the drive shafts behind the cover. I found one set screw that is missing on the glue spindle shaft. And the bearing connecting to the chain drive is loose

I wouldn't be too concerned with the chain slack. Better slack than too tight. The universal joints should get more grease. Run the machine and see if any of the universal joints are binding when rotating.

I think I see your problem! The central U joint is assembled wrong. The top U joint should be rotated 90° with respect to the lower joint. They are on the left and right assemblies. Universal joints are not constant velocity joints so when assembled wrong will cause jerky motion

Thanks, I will change that tomorrow when I replace the chains and hopefully see an improvement.

That is the tape advance. It might not affect anything uptop but maybe the whole drive below. This chain could have been stretched out unevenly as well. I'll post a picture tomorrow of the main drive on the front. I'm not sure if the tensioner sure push out making a larger radius or pull it in to make a tighter radius.

I have replaced the chains, lower bearings on the pressure wheel and shimmed the sprockets level to make sure the chain doesn't rub against the bearing mounts. Still the same. There is a noise in the 90 degree gearbox but don't think that is doing it. Maybe I should stick to 1mm tape.

The bearing in the top here seaming good. Should it replace anyway?

I just had a closer look at the photos from before and I missed that all the U joint assemblies are wrong. The missing grub screw is a clue that this has been apart before. The yokes of the U joints should be oriented 90° to each other on the shaft. Otherwise the rotation speeds up and slows down twice every rotation. If you measure the distance between the waves on the tape I bet you will come up with half the circumference of the glue applicator.

I have tried in phase, out of phase, more pressure, less pressure, less glue, more glue, hotter glue, cooler glue, holding my breath and crossing my fingers. I have sanded some edges just to see if it is cnc cut issues. Changed chains and readjusted sprocket alinement. There are two bearings in the upper pressure wheel station im going to replace. How much should the glue pot move as the piece runs by? Also could this be from the 90 degree gear box if there is a vibration?

We had the same problem with our old bander, I think it was chatter marks from the cnc when cutting our doors transfering thru the banding thicker tapes always seem to mask the probelm better, our new bander has pre mill so we dont have that issue any more. If your cutting on a cnc you may try slowing your feed speed down but not too much where you have burning.I usually do this at the machine.

Thanks for the reply. I have a final slow pass already at 100ipm taking off .02 and the onion skin. I have tried both directions milling as well. When I sanded the edge there was no visible difference, I would figure just for a test would have improved the outcome.

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
