Edge feeder not working on Holtzher Sprint 1310-1

Hi There

This is my first post on this forum. Very grateful to find this industry resource.

I cannot work out why my edge feed is not working anymore on my 2003 Sprint 1310-1. The pressure roller is working but not the electric motor belt feed. The screen does say that it is on.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Check that you don't have a piece of banding obstructing the eye that triggers the actuation of belt that advances the edging
Past that you might check the sensitivity setting on the eye itself
Next step the timer inside the machine that receives signal from the eye.
Might check with your service technician.
I have received very good service from Bayside Industrial on both technical support and parts.

You may possibly have a missing or damaged reflective target that detects when edging is not present in the strip or roll gate
Problem is most often simply a snip of edge tape or glue blocking the eye, so I'd start there
Eliminate the simple answers first

Thank you Jim.

I just had a look and the sensor light(eye) is always on. Even if I put some tape in front. For some reason when the machine is running if I put my finger on top of the eye adj screw it turns the light off and the tape will advance after edging a piece.

You can adjust the sensitivity with said screw.
I adjusted mine, but did wind up replacing it for one that detects black/dark colored edgebanding
Bayside Industrial has them and helpful on phone with install

Hi Jim

Success! I adjusted the screw back and forwards and finally got it to turn off when there was tape present. I should get a little bit of nail polish or something to paint on so it doesn't vibrate out of adjustment again.

Thanks so much for the advice. You have taken a lot of pressure off me.

Cheers.

Glad to help.
I wouldn't get too hasty immobilizing the adjustment screw.
The eye simply loses sensitivity over time and will likely need a tweak down the road

When we had a Holtzher bander we replaced that eye with one that required a reflector making it work much better especially if you use dark color edges.

We got replacement sensors from Automation Direct it was a quick easy fix that resolved our issues with using dark colors. See page 2 for description of different types of sensors.

Thank you Rich. Great idea. The sensors I saw on the website are much bigger. Was this a problem?

Also I have another problem with the 1310-1.

The control screen has lines missing which makes it hard to read the numbers.
I sent an enquiry to my Holtzher spare parts supplier here in Australia and they said they were told that Holtzher is not repairing or replacing them for this model anymore. He did say that he would pass on my request to them but indicated it probably wouldn’t go any further. I have seen on YouTube people fixing these. Has any one got any other ideas that I may pursue?

When i was looking at purchasing a later model bander, and found one that had the screen like yours, Richard, at Bayside Industrial had one on stock
The price seemed fair enough.
I wound up not buying the newer bander after all, and he help me repair my current HH

Hi Jim

What is the HH? Do you have the same edge bander as me?

Jim Herron

I have a Holz Her (HH) 1435SE
I was going to buy a later model but my machine tech told me I should stay with my analog edge bander as long as I could keep it running. When a PLC control takes a dump your fixing to outlay some $$ to get back running.
I bought a mostly complete parts machine a few years back for 250.00 and have a lot of parts like spare trimmer motors, some pneumatic fittings, and copy wheels, cannibalized for backup, and sold the frame and stuff for scrap.
I stick with Bayside on the electric components because he knows the troubleshooting and is fair on the parts I've needed.
It is in good shape and currently running great. It does what I need to do, mostly .5 or 1 mil wood with the occasional pvc thrown in.
Lee Johnson used to help me troubleshoot over the phone and supply parts. Good guy that could explain things well over the phone.
Richard at Bayside Industrial took over after he passed away.
Both know these machines very well.

Hi Jim

Richard said he has a new screen to sell me which is fantastic news. Thank you for the lead.

WOODWEB's forums are a highly regarded resource for professional woodworkers. Messages and responses that are crafted in a professional and civil manner strengthen this resource. Messages that do not reflect a professional tone reduce the value of our forums.

Messages are inappropriate when their content: is deemed libelous in nature or is based on rumor, fails to meet basic standards of decorum, contains blatant advertising or inappropriate emphasis on self promotion (return to top).

Libel:   Posts which defame an individual or organization, or employ a tone which can be viewed as malicious in nature. Words, pictures, or cartoons which expose a person or organization to public hatred, shame, disgrace, or ridicule, or induce an ill opinion of a person or organization, are libelous.

Improper Decorum:   Posts which are profane, inciting, disrespectful or uncivil in tone, or maliciously worded. This also includes the venting of unsubstantiated opinions. Such messages do little to illuminate a given topic, and often have the opposite effect. Constructive criticism is acceptable (return to top).

Advertising:   The purpose of WOODWEB Forums is to provide answers, not an advertising venue. Companies participating in a Forum discussion should provide specific answers to posted questions. WOODWEB suggests that businesses include an appropriately crafted signature in order to identify their company. A well meaning post that seems to be on-topic but contains a product reference may do your business more harm than good in the Forum environment. Forum users may perceive your references to specific products as unsolicited advertising (spam) and consciously avoid your web site or services. A well-crafted signature is an appropriate way to advertise your services that will not offend potential customers. Signatures should be limited to 4-6 lines, and may contain information that identifies the type of business you're in, your URL and email address (return to top).

Repeated Forum Abuse: Forum participants who repeatedly fail to follow WOODWEB's Forum Guidelines may encounter difficulty when attempting to post messages.

There are often situations when the original message asks for opinions: "What is the best widget for my type of shop?". To a certain extent, the person posting the message is responsible for including specific questions within the message. An open ended question (like the one above) invites responses that may read as sales pitches. WOODWEB suggests that companies responding to such a question provide detailed and substantive replies rather than responses that read as a one-sided product promotion. It has been WOODWEB's experience that substantive responses are held in higher regard by our readers (return to top).
