Spraying metallic gold on wood

Anyone have any experience finding metallic gold paint for wood application. I've never done it before. My knowledge is in conversion varnish. Any help with finding the product and any tips spraying it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!! in advance.

stan, a heavily filled product will typically "pack out" with an airspray or hvlp gun. you what you need i would think would be an internal mix spray gun with a smaller tip opening. the internal mix gun is typically used for things like filled materials, abrasive material like road marking paint, etc although this is hardly a material that is that thick. i understand that. binks would be a good source, and also i would ask the material supplier that you choose. binks designates that type of gun a pi or pressure feed internal mix. the other possible way would be a gravity feed gun with say a large opening like a .70 or 1.8.. a lot depends on the material and how fast the heavy gold flake etc fall out of suspension. good luck herb j

Depending on the look you are after, Vero Metal could work. It's sprayable metal powder that's suspended in a binder that you buff out to release and expose the metal after it has dried. The process is similar to buffing out high gloss, lots of elbow grease, but you can make wood look like steel, aluminum, brass, copper, gold ect. Most of the Italian companies (Sivam, Renner, ICA, Milesi ect) make a metallic effect that's more of a metal flake (similar to car finish). I spray both with a SATA 100 1.8 tip.

craig and herb, thanks!! Question: you mentioned a couple tip sizes. How do I convert 1.8, .70, to thousandths. I mostly use a .011 tip.

stan if u r using a .11 tip my guess is u r using an air assisted airless which i don't think will work for you, i am afraid the the solid will pack out behind such a small opening plus the pressure of the pump will make it worse. there is a website out there convertunits dot com that should be a good one to check out. be sure to check with ur material mfg about best way to spray, imho an airless or air assist, or airmix etc might be a hassle because of shearing and packing out behind the tip, imho a low pressure system like air spray hvlp gravity gun etc would b my choice. enjoy the super bowl and good eats btw, i spray a lot thru my aaa like cv etc, i am not against aaa etc, just not for this type of coating
good luck

Sivam sells metallic additives to their wood coatings. I haven't used them myself but their other products I've used have been good.

Thanks again gentlemen.
Herb, yes I almost exclusively use AAA but, I have a 2 qt can hooked up to hvlp accuspray system. Haven't used it in a while, but if I remember correctly I was running it at about 12-15 psi air and 5-7 air pressure. That work??

i think so but i would check with mfg i would probably go with a 1.8 tip or so, and a low fluid pressure, how much material are u spraying, just a guess, if not a big qty like less than a qt a day or so, rather than having the material in the hose and clean out stuff, maybe an inexpensive gravity feed with like a dekup, on top but again i would check with coating mfg for their input. thanks for the kind words, i love spray eqpt and happy to help anyone or anyone's question on eqpt. enjoy the superbowl
good luck

Forgot to ask. Should I omit a fluid filter when spraying the metallic gold? I was thinking a filter might filter out the metallic.
2/8/25 #11: Spraying metallic gold on wood ...
yes, i believe although not having sprayed this material that a fluid filter would be a pia. i do hope u contact the material mfg for an application sheet that would help you out
glad to help if others have question same goes, glad to help
have a nice weekend

Metallics need to be sprayed with a gravity fed cup gun with no filter. If you spray it using anything with a fluid line, the metal drops out of suspension and your coats won't be even.

Thanks Craig!!! I'm going to contact the manufacturer as has been suggested. But it's possible I will get more help here than there. :) Fun fact: I've never used a gravity fed cup gun for anything other than glazing.

Having done metallic and pearls, for myself and large Architectural and commercial Mfg. Companies over 5 decades, what is needed is one of two things or both if you plan on doing any large amount of this kind.
1): A Devilbiss JGA air spray gun wth a SS qt. Cup that has a air driven propeller that is speed adjustable, to keep the flake uniformly mixed, and a tip and air cap larger than the coarsist Flake you decide to use, which can then be used with all the finer less coarse ones you may use in the future, where the air and material flow can be adjusted accordingly..!!
2): The other method is using a flocking gun, preferably A Paasche type 1 qt. This is different and fills the need of needing a gun that blows dry pearls or metal flakes onto a clear wet surface right after the clear ( or pigmented ) coating is applied, which takes the problem of having to keep the flake and material consistently stirred out of the equation all together..! Note: if doing large surfaces, as I was doing for Ontario Store fixtures, on their 25' x 4' circumference pillars, it will be necessary to regard the surfaces to keep them wet, this was accomplished by spraying a foot or two at a time with a 50/50 lacquer retarded and lacquer ( acrylic), so the coating would stay wet and the pearl, in this case, would lay flat on the surface..!! The Paasche flocking gun, allowed for very little to heavy amounts to be applied, depending on the needs.keep in mind your only trying to keep the coated surface wet and since this process is done quickly afterwords, the retarded thinner is "misted" onto the coating, not wet coated with it.!!
Hope these option are of some use, and continued learning and success, as you go forward with your finishing business and endeavors.!!

Large area or small? I've used Rustoleum Metal flake gold and then covered it with Krystal CV and it worked well. I was only using it to paint some face frame beads surrounding a door so it was small coverage.

I have a little over 100 lin ft of 1" tall dentil mold and about 60-70 lin ft of 1 1/4" panel molding. Was the Rustoleum you mentioned in a spray can?? Thanks for the info!!

Ya it was a spray can. Here's the vanity with the gold bead and I actually have a picture of the setup spraying the bead with a picture of the can in it. I guess the cap shows you what color it was and if you need to know that I might still have the can in the shop.

Years ago I sprayed Modern Masters Metallic paint. I used a cheap harbor freight cup gun off a turbine. It was a decorator job and they wanted the back board of an open console table a gold or bronze color. It came out well surprisingly.
